Importing coal

The Brecon Mountain Railway runs from Merthyr Tydfil to the nearby Brecon Beacons National Park.

The trains are powered by coal. But the coal does not come from the nearby opencast coal mine – instead, it is imported from Russia.

So, the question arises for anti-coal campaigners – while we still do not have fully carbon-neutral energy sources, which is the least ethically problematic? Mining locally, with the attendant risks for that local community? Or importing it from abroad, where it will undoubtedly affect another local community, with the additional costs and energy consumption of importing it?
