The People vs Miller Argent

The ‘Residents Against Ffos-y-fran’ (RAFF) group is made up of a small number of local residents including Chris and Alyson Austin, Terry Evans and Betty Condron. Support for the campaign is not as overt or as empassioned as, for example, the campaign against the Third Runway at Heathrow Airport. Indeed, there is significant local support for the mine, as evidenced on the ‘Support Ffos-y-fran’ Facebook group*.

RAFF believe that the opencast coal mine has been forced upon the local community by the local council, the Welsh Assembly and the UK Government. Furthermore, they point out that they have not been offered compensation, a buffer zone, or support for relocation.

Miller Argent is self-regulating. That is, there is no independent monitoring of noise and dust from the mine, which operates from 7am until 11pm, Monday to Saturday.

* A number of people I have spoke to believe that the Facebook group has been set up by Miller Argent and that its uncritical support for the mine is propaganda. I emailed over 100 people on the Facebook group to ask them to contribute to this story but nobody replied.
